VI La Iguana Invitational Golf TournamentSeventh Annual Golf Tournament Ronald McDonald
Successful Golf Tournament for Kids and Teenagers with Physical Disabilities

• 126 players supported children with physical disabilities

A harsh sun accompanied the 126 golfers, both national and international, who played for six hours during the seventh edition of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Tournament, one of the most important golf events in the country.

The Tournament was carried out successfully at the field of La Iguana Golf Course, Los Sueños Marriott, Herradura Bay. This year's first place went to Alvaro Ortiz, Luis Gerardo Paredes and Gerardo Draggonne with a score of 66. The first team won three passes to play the Ronald McDonald House Charities Tournament in Argentina, which will be held in November.

The second place was for the team of Milton Salas, Jonathan Chavarría and Oscar Herrera, while the third was for Fran Beach, Bob Pinto and Bob Taylor, both with a score of 68. The play mode was scramble, in threesomes.

The award ceremony was held during a luncheon at the Marriott Los Sueños Hotel, and the organizers thank all the players and sponsors for their participation in this wonderful charity event.

"Ronald McDonald House Charities Costa Rica greatly appreciates your solidarity with our cause, which this year will allow us to help dozens of children and teenagers with physical disabilities" said Dra. Lidieth Carballo, President of the Charity.

Play for the kids

The objective of Ronald McDonald House Charities Tournament is to help children and teenagers with physical disabilities that are in a vulnerable condition and the fundraising event is one of the most important actions that are carried out every year to improve the quality of life of the children.

The funds raised at the Tournament will be granted to continue funding the First Bank of Wheelchairs for Children and Teenagers with Physical Disabilities and limited resources of the country. The 2007 edition had the same goal and the last Tournament allowed the charity to grant a special wheelchair to 41 children aged between 4 and 16. Every wheelchair had an average cost between $1800 and $3000.

Since last year, the Board of Directors has focused the fundraising efforts on the creation of the integral project "Wheelchairs for Children and Teenagers with Physical Disabilities and limited resources".

"RMHC Costa Rica is the first institution in the country that will be devoting resources to give the right equipment to each patient in need that was diagnosed by physicians and therapist of the CENARE (Centro Nacional de Rehabilitación)", said Carballo.

In Costa Rica, approximately 400 thousand people suffer some type of disability and physical disability is the biggest group among those people. Some projections mentioned that by 2015 the population with any kind of disability will increase by 24%.

At the moment, approximately 842 people are on a waiting list to receive a wheelchair; some of them have been waiting since 2002. 80% of the people on this list are children or teenagers and most of them are from families with limited resources.

Since its creation in 2002, the charity has had the great support of corporate sponsors and friends that have allowed us to create a high impact on the Costa Rican children, through programs that directly benefit the health and general well-being of these children.

During this period the charity has granted more than $660 thousand dollars to specific projects, each year, benefiting directly more than 315 thousand children and their families.

VI La Iguana Invitational Golf TournamentSixth Annual La Iguana Invitational Golf Tournament

In an unparalleled event, the long-awaited daytime and nighttime golf tournament took place in our La Iguana Golf Course on Saturday, March 29, 2008.

Thanks to the exceptional participation of our sponsors, the golf event was as successful as had been predicted.

Thirty teams composed of three players each, using the best ball format (Scramble), battled for 18 holes on this spectacular day to secure a place as one of the 10 teams to participate in the nighttime finals.

The 10 teams fortunate enough to compete in the nighttime event were:

- Frank Navarro, Joseph Novac, Carlos Rojas with a 65;
- Oscar Araya, Roger Araya, Alejandro Madriz with a 66;
- Ron Shoha, James Midlebrooks, Kelly Kastelz with a 66;
- Grez Fox, Jeff Traout, Dan Sindelar with a 66;
- James Renfro, John Renfro, Mike Búster with a 67;
- Tony Zeis, Mark Dinan, Jerry Adams with a 67;
- James Murphy, Sandy Murphy, Norman Ducharme with a 68;
- Don Thompson, Rob Baronet, Ron Payne with a 68;
- John Casey, Jamie Casey, Jorge Brenes with a 68;
- Viveca Jeppsson, Luís Muñoz, Christian Morera with a 69.

The La Iguana nighttime event captivated the imagination of the golfers. The course seduced the players with a stage filled with colored lights. The traps were elegantly outlined with red lights; the lakes and rivers radiated with blue lights; the fairways were resplendent in white showing the route to follow, and the greens were dazzling with green illumination.

This beautiful setting provided the nighttime backdrop for these talented individuals to play five incredible holes in the alternate shot format. The Americans Tony Zeis, Mark Dinan and Jerry Adams were the indisputable winners with 23 strokes for an overall total of 90. In second place were Carlos Rojas, Frank Navarro and Joseph Novac with 28 strokes for a total of 93. Third place went to Don Thompson, Rob Baronet, Ron Payne with 26 shots for a total of 94.

An explosive fireworks display presented by CAVICA provided a perfect end to our successful tournament.
